In Washington, President Harris sat in the Situation Room and watched as the American military frantically scrambled to readjust. They had, on reflection, been unwise to write off the reports of Chinese soldiers and equipment moving on so wide a scale. But, that being said, he thought to himself at the time and would argue both orally and in writing later, who could have reasonably expected the People's Liberation Army to prove capable of such a broad and bold strategic move?

In addition to the Abraham Lincoln Strike Group and the liberal use of B-17s to launch so-called "terror raids" across Europe, the President had authorized the provision of whatever other assistance was practical. He had, however, had no choice but to reluctantly refuse a British request for the deployment of the XVIII Airborne Corps, the risks of sending 100,000 men and women loaded on densely-packed airplanes into contested airspace being simply too great. Instead, the dispatch of a major relief force for Britain would take some weeks. A Corps-sized Marine Expeditionary Force, originally intended for the Pacific, was now being assembled at Norfolk and it would be escorted across the Atlantic by the two Carriers that could be deployed in time along with all of the air assets that they could sprinkle across the Atlantic Ocean.
